Impiety: Worshippers of the seventh tyranny

21/02/11  ||  Love Lagerkvist

Alrighty then, time for some new stuff by Singaporean blackened thrashers Impiety, let’s just pop it in and… Hold on a minute. There must be some kind of mistake here. I mean, why else would the album be in just one 40 minute long track? This must be a mishap, right guys? Guys?

But alas, this was no fuckup. Impiety – a band known for hits such as “Apokalyptik nuklear battlebeas” and “Hymnvocation of Nazarethian nunwhores” – actually released a one-track concept album, which to their credit is pretty brave for a band who’ve always prioritized christfucking sharks over blackwater parks.

Starting off with some Burzumian ambience, Impiety shortly follows this up with a blast of the proto-hellnoise these dudes do best. Drums are pummeling, vocals are shrieking, guitars are tremoloing at full speed and all is good in the world. A guitar solo later and the first surprise clicks in: Impiety actually slow down, showing a decidedly grimmer side of this panzer division. There is even some semi-clean singing for that extra touch of nuclear holocaust.

So we got that the first 10 minutes contain some fairly good stuff, so naturally the remaining 30 minutes must be at least listenable? Well yes, they certainly are. In fact, it’s nearly on the same level as the first part, which probably has something to do with the fact that it is the first part. The same ambient interlude, the same tremolo riffs and the same lyrics. It’s still as enjoyable as it was the first time, but when the same part comes in for the fifth time it starts to get monotonous – and not in that cozy drone way.

Even with all its faults, “Worshippers…” is for all intents and purposes a capable slab of music. If anything, it displays a progression in the band’s sound that, after some maturing locked up in a damp cellar, could result in some great stuff further along the road. Better not disturb them.
